Victory over France is a memorable consolation for Tunisia fans
Café El Emir’s terrace had emptied out after France scored, but the few fans who remained exploded into cries of joy when the goal was disallowed, hooting and hollering and jumping about.
Chants of “On a gagné!” (We won!) filled the air.
“It’s a historic victory, even if it’s a bit bittersweet because we’re not moving forward,” said Tunisian fan Chakib Ellili. “Tunisia has had a tough 10 years since the revolution. Football gives us hope.”
France World Cup journey continues, a new era awaits Tunisia
France advance as Group D winners. While they lost today, there is little doubt that the wholesale changes made to their squad at the start of the game played their part.
Les Bleus remain one of the favourites and strongest teams in the World Cup.
Tunisia’s World Cup campaign may have ended in frustration, but there are plenty of positives that they can take out from this campaign. They can bow out with their heads held high and use the experience in order to build for the future.
Tunisian football hero Whabi Khazri, 31, got the goal today and it remains to be seen if he will be part of his nation’s build-up towards qualification for the 2026 World Cup in North America or if father time will call.
Victory turns to sadness for some Tunisian fans
With a bit of luck on their side, Jalel Kadri’s side could have advanced to the last 16.
Some fans are in tears. They played impressively in their 0-0 opening game against Denmark and now in their 1-0 win over France. It was the 1-0 defeat against Australia which ultimately let them down.
Here’s how Group D looks after the final results. France go through as group winners with Australia joining them in the knockout phase.
A World Cup shock
France still go through but this is a moment that the Tunisian footballers and fans will remember for the rest of their lives.
It gives the North Africans something to cheer about even though they bow out of the competition.
In the 92-year history of the World Cup, the tournament has featured some great shocks. Tunisia beating France will join the list.
Full-time
Tunisia have held on to record an against-the-odds 1-0 win after Griezmann’s equaliser was ruled out.
The Eagles of Carthage will not progress to the last 16 due to Australia’s victory over Denmark in Group D’s other final fixture, but will take solace from this upset against the 2018 champions.
Tunisia 1-0 France
VAR to the rescue
The referee is the most popular person in the stadium. Unbelievable.
The Tunisian fans are clapping him. They were whistling him earlier.
Goal disallowed
Griezmann celebrated, but it will mean nothing as VAR disallowed the goal. Tunisia will all but certainly claim a memorable win.
Griezmann goal ruled out following VAR review
Huge drama as Kiwi referee Matthew Conger overturns Griezmann’s last-minute equaliser, with the Frenchman adjudged to have been offside following a VAR review.
90+8 mins: Tunisia 1-0 France
Tunisia are out of the World Cup
Australia have beaten Denmark 1-0.
To add further heartbreak to Tunisian fans, France have also drawn level. Double dismay for Tunisia.
GOAL
Griezmann draws France level at the death. The Athletico Madrid man volleys home from 10 yards (nine metres).
98 mins: Tunisia 1-1 France
Tension in Paris
These final minutes are tense for Tunisian fans. Some of the spectators at Cafe el Emir in Paris are watching the Australia-Denmark game on their phones. There’s a lot of screaming and jumping.
“Mbappé is dangerous,” one fan tells me.
France find no joy in hunt for equaliser
France are shifting the ball from side to side as they probe for a goal to draw the contest level.
Mbappe picks up the ball on the edge of the Tunisian box but sends a cross drifting harmlessly out behind the goal. An upset is well and truly on the cards here.

Mbappe fires free-kick straight at Tunisian wall

8 minutes of added time
Eight minutes added on after Muani fires at goal from distance following a neat bit of interplay from the French.
Dahmen does well and turns his effort behind for a corner.

Mbappe’s cameo has been menacing
Mbappe has looked solid since coming on, teasing the Tunisian defenders. Had he been on earlier than the 63rd minute, France might not be trailing.
Mbappe brilliance forces Dahmen save
A flash of brilliance from Mbappe who works his way through Tunisia’s defence before firing off a shot from the left side of the box but Dahmen keeps the ball out.

Tunisian fans are not cheering as loudly as before
Perhaps they know the score of the other match. Whatever happens in the other group game, this will be a memorable win for the Carthage Eagles if the score remains.
Dembele fumbles as France falter
Dembele receives the ball high on the right flank from a cross-field pass but fails to get it under control and knocks it straight out for a Tunisia goal kick.
It’s not happening for the 2018 champions at the moment, despite all their attacking intent.

Tunisia swap Slimane for defender Ali Abdi, an indication the Eagles of Carthage are content to try and see the game out.

Long final minutes for Tunisia
Griezmann and Mbappe have injected some energy into the French attack. Tunisia will have to hold out and also hope that Denmark can mount a comeback against Australia.
Griezmann corner prompts scramble
Another corner for France. The ball is whipped in by Griezmann, prompting a scramble in the six-yard box, but Tunisia manage to hack it clear and ease the pressure for the moment.
The French have picked up the tempo and are now pressing hard for an equaliser to avoid a major upset.
82 mins: Tunisia 1-0 France
Stunned Les Bleus fans are silent
The French fans behind the Tunisian goal have stopped waving the tricolour. They were not expecting this. They are the world champions, after all.
Mbappe, Griezmann combine
Mbappe and Griezmann combine with some clever interplay on the edge of Tunisia’s box but the ball drifts its way out to the right and away from danger for the Eagles of Carthage.
France come again though and win a corner on the left, from which Disasi wins another set piece. The second corner comes to nothing as Tunisia clear the ball away.
