Google has announced a $12.5bn deal to buy Motorola’s mobile technology division.
If approved, Motorola Mobility would be the biggest acquisition by the web giant, allowing it to compete directly with Apple.
The deal would also give Google ownership of some 17,000 patents – a vital weapon in an industry where intellectual property rights have become a battleground.
